How to display Salon products?

How you actually display your products is a key factor in making your salon retail story a success. High quality, functional and stylish retail units are a must. “It’s a false economy to buy cheap retail units. Investing in salon furniture from Olymp may cost you more in the initial stages, however you know it’s going to last. Retail units in particular need to look great but more importantly they need to talk to the client; tell them about the benefits of the individual product lines. Interact and educate rather than just stack the stock on shelves…

It’s a good point. With supermarkets competing for shampoo sales, the units in a salon need to reflect the premium price. How can you expect someone to buy a shampoo that is ten times the price of the supermarket if you’re displaying it on a tacky looking unit?

According to Matthew, pricing the salon products is a must because quite rightly, no one wants the embarrassment of asking how much something is. “The majority of people would rather walk away than ask the price,” he says.

Finally, always have testers on display so anyone can touch smell and experience the product before they buy it. “Testers are so important and you can guarantee they will help sell more products. People want to smell the ingredients, not just read about them on the bottle,” says Matthew.

If retailing is something you’ve managed to master, then you’re no doubt laughing all the way to the stock room. If on the other hand you’re still in the mindset that hairdressers are not sales people, then it’s definitely time for a change of direction. Good retailing can considerably increase your profits and most importantly, completes the service that you’re offering as a professional hairdresser.

Small Tip on Salon Design:

Plumbing

The first thing to ensure is that the valves are balanced properly so that temperatures are consistent when other taps are turned on. Also get your plumber to do a pressure test before the floor tiles go back down. It’s a simple test and will save ripping the floor up if it hasn’t been done properly.

The constant usage of water is a salon means that inevitably things will go wrong from time to time.

Therefore access panels are a must. Access to valves and pumps must be easy so that you don’t have to destroy the décor in order to get something fixed.

Salon Retail Checklist – Matthew Lutos

Matthew Luto’s background is in designing high-end beauty units, so competing for sales is something he truly gets.

*Change your mind-set. The quicker you can start thinking that retailing will benefit your business, the quicker you’ll start making money.

*Look at the competition. Visit high end department stores and see how they display their retail – notice how immaculate the displays (and the sales people are) at all times.

*Look at the products you are retailing and ask yourself if you have a comprehensive range which does not have too many conflicting items.

*Make sure every product is clearly labelled with point of sale material.

*Invest in decent furniture. Check out Olymp’s range of retail displays for something really impressive.

*Keep the retail area spotless – always.

Salon Retail Tips – Matthew Lutos

Matthew Lutos is the managing director of salon furniture company Beauty Planet Salon Design and Olymp UK and when it comes to salon design and how to retail – it’s his forte.

Last month Matthew expressed the need to clearly display your salon retail products and all the relevant information about each product. This month, Matthew suggests dedicating a retail manager to the area.

“In order for your retail business to be a success, every single member of your team needs to have in-depth product training. The biggest point of difference between a salon and the high street is that you have the professional expertise to offer clients. You’re the experts in creating a style and understanding what products are needed to get the look. Can you really imagine a supermarket assistant knowing what products are best for fighting frizz or what conditioner is best for redheads? Of course not, that’s why it’s vital that your team are truly experts in retail.

It’s important to remember that clients want your knowledge and expertise and you’re not trying to push them information that they don’t want.

However as well as educating the entire team on your salon product offerings, I always recommend giving one person the responsibility of managing the area and taking responsibility for the retail side of the business. The ideal person for this role is a receptionist. It generally works really well because the receptionist is the first and last point of contact for clients, and they are usually positioned near the retail area – making them perfectly placed to maintain it.

It’s really important that the area is fully stocked at all times, if there’s only a small amount of one product left on the shelf it won’t create as much of an impact as a fully stocked shelf. Keeping each product and the actual unit spotlessly clean is really important. I also truly believe that you need to invest in quality furniture and displaying your retail on flimsy display cabinets will not create the right impression. Your products need to look like they are worth the investment, and dusty products on a unit that’s not built for professional use will most definitely have an impact in sales.

Finally, don’t forget about testers. Haircare products are all about touching the senses – people want to smell, touch and feel the products so let the products sell themselves by having testers displayed.

Most importantly, make the retail area part of the salon that you are proud of. It should never look like an add-on to the salon or an afterthought; it should be an integral part of the business.”

Things to consider before Salon Refurbishment

Matthew Lutos is the Managing Director of Beauty Planet Salon Design and Olymp Salon furniture and has been involved numerous renovations and salon refurbishments. As part of our New Year Salon Clinic. Matthew shares his top tips of pre-project considerations, which you may be thinking about this time of year.

“ As with all major projects, good planning is paramount, but even with good salon planning there are always a few pitfalls to beware of,” Says Matthew.

Floor Plan

It is so important to get the floor plan right. You need to maximise the space without it being overbearing. You need to get the balance between having enough space so that clients have a pleasant experience and utilising space efficiently. Also, be aware that architects might not take into consideration the amount of space a stylist needs around the styling station. This is also true for the backwash. There needs to be enough room to work, for back bar and also sufficient room for customers to walk to and from the chairs, bearing in mind any extra room needed for legs rests.

A general rule of thumb on space for a styling station is that an area of 1.2 metres is required. For a backwash chair you need 2.3 metres long by 1 metre wide. However you need to take account of the environment such as additional structures.

3-D Visuals

Invest in 3-D Visuals – they are not just a bit of fancy visual magic. Being able to see what your salon will look like is really important because how you interpret the floor plan may not be how your builder interprets it. A 3-D Visual plan will give you both a point of reference and ensure that you are both interpreting it the same way. This can avoid much frustration, extra cost and heartache later on.
